Our Story

In 2017, a devastating wildfire destroyed the home of Shawn Sahbari’s retired father in Northern California, leaving an indelible mark. Witnessing the destruction firsthand, Shawn became determined to help prevent such tragedies.

By 2018, his vision was clear: to create fire prevention technology with an “unrelenting commitment to the environment, health, and safety.” The result was Komodo—a revolutionary, long-term fire retardant that forms a protective shield, starving fires of fuel. Incredibly, its proprietary formula is also a powerful fire suppressant, 20 times more effective than water.

From inception, Komodo has been “benign by design,” challenging the notion that fire retardants must come with harmful environmental trade-offs, referred to as necessary “collateral damage.” Certified by the USDA and US Forest Service in 2022, Komodo's plant-based formula is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, non-corrosive and safe for people, pets, plants, wildlife, and aquatic life.

As wildfires intensify, so does the need for Komodo’s innovations. Our expanding suite of solutions includes Komodo911 Emergency Fire Suppression, Phantom Blue Fire Protective Coating, FireReady911 just-in-time wildfire protection, the automated Komodo DOME system, FireBlock365 paint coating for structure protection, and Komodo Fire Complex AI, an integrated defense system for large-scale campuses, complexes, and communities of any size.

In 2024, Komodo hosted the annual ASTM Conference, supporting efforts to establish global standards for unmanned, untethered drones. Committed to revolutionizing wildfire defense, Komodo is advancing drone technology to combat fires more effectively. To develop robust fire prevention systems that protect valuable assets, Komodo Robotics is integrating military-grade AI to enhance every aspect of fire protection.

The Komodo Name


The “Komodo” name was inspired by the formidable Komodo Dragon, whose natural, elegant chainmail armor is one of the toughest skins in the animal kingdom, mirroring the impenetrable fire barrier of Komodo Fire-Systems.
